F203 Bicycle highway Brussels-Bertem
along the E40
The ‘Werken aan de Ring’ programme aims to provide better cycling infrastructure. We are building safe bicycle paths and comfortable bicycle bridges and tunnels. They will enable you to cycle quickly and smoothly along and across the Ring. This is how we plan to offer road users a worthy alternative to the car and to gradually reduce the number of cars on the Ring. The construction of the F203 bicycle highway is part of this ambition.
Cycling in greenery along the E40
The F203 bicycle highway is routed along the E40 to provide a smooth, green connection between Brussels and Bertem. The construction of the F203 will take place in several zones. The Werkvennootschap is responsible for the following four zones:
Zone 1: Woluwedal —Tollaan (Completed)
Construction of the F203 is complete and it is in use between Woluwedal (R22) and the Tollaan (on the border with the Brussels region).
- Connection to the F202 bicycle highway along Woluwedal (R22) in Zaventem
- The bicycle highway is not always flush with the surroundings, but at an elevation or recessed into the terrain.
- We are planting grasses and bushes beside the noise barrier along the E40 and along both sides of the bicycle highway hedges enhance its green character. This also helps integrate the bicycle highway into its immediate surroundings.
Zone 2: Tollaan — Gemeenschappenlaan (Completed)
From the Tollaan onwards, the E40 is located in the Brussels Capital Region. The F203 is extended up to the Gemeenschappenlaan.
Zone 3: Woluwedal — Oudstrijderslaan (Completed)
Between Woluwedal and Oudstrijderslaan, you will find zone 3 of bicycle highway F203. We redesigned the Statieplaats and part of the Oudstrijderslaan with a new footpath and cycle path, new lanes and we placed bicycle sheds.
Zone 4: Kortenberg - Bertem (In progress)
Between the Dorpelstraat in Kortenberg, near the Everberg Noord car park, and the E40-E314 interchange in Bertem, we are constructing zone 4 of the F203 bicycle highway.
The bicycle highway follows a smooth route north of the E40, completely surrounded by greenery. Building a bicycle highway along a motorway, watercourse or railway is a conscious choice. This way, we offer cyclists a smooth route without many height differences and we reduce the dangerous crossings with local car traffic as much as possible.
Crossings with local roads are made safe:
- We are building bicycle bridges at the Tervuursesteenweg and the Konijnenpijp in Kortenberg
- Cyclists pass safely under the bridges of Hollestraat and Heerbaan.
- We provide a bicycle tunnel to safely cross the N3
- Connections to local cycle paths are provided at Hoekstraat, Konijnenpijp and Tervuursesteenweg. Cyclists will also be able to get on and off the new cycling highway in Hollestraat and Meerbeeksesteenweg.
At the E40-E314 interchange a connection will be made with the F29 Brussels-Tervuren-Leuven cycle highway.
Zone 5 and Zone 6 have not yet been designed by The Werkvennootschap
Both zones are in the study phase. Zone 5 (Tramlaan-Mechelsesteenweg) will be built by the municipality of Zaventem. Zone 6 (Oudstrijderslaan-Molenstraat — Tramlaan) will be constructed by Aquafin.
Zone 7: Sterrebeek - Kortenberg (Study)
The part of the bicycle highway in zone 7 continues from the Mechelsesteenweg-Tramlaan intersection through Bosdellestraat. A traffic-safe and low-traffic street where only local traffic drives through. The street is wide enough to allow cyclists to pass without any problems.
The bicycle highway then continues along an existing path on the edge of the forest towards the E40 and then on to the tunnel at Everslaan. After the tunnel, the bicycle highway continues along the north side of the E40 towards Bertem (Zone 4).
