F28 bicycle highway
along the A12
The ‘Werken aan de Ring’ programme aims to provide better cycling infrastructure. We are building safe bicycle paths and comfortable bicycle bridges and tunnels. They will enable you to cycle quickly and smoothly along and across the Ring. This is how we plan to offer road users a worthy alternative to the car and to gradually reduce the number of cars on the Ring. The construction of the F28 bicycle highway is part of this ambition.
Cycling in greenery along the A12
We will be constructing the F28 bicycle highway so that it runs parallel to the A12, eventually connecting Willebroek to Brussels. The first part of this section was built within the ‘Werken aan de Ring’ programme and runs from the Vilvoordsesteenweg N211 in Meise to the Heysel complex.
- The F28 connects to bicycle routes in the direction of Antwerp and Boom
- The new route forms a green bicycle link between Meise, the Royal Botanic Garden and the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken.
On 11 September 2019 , the programme celebrated the inauguration of the first bicycle highway with a festive neighbourhood party in Meise.
F28 Expansion
Further development of the F28 bicycle highway along the A12 is currently being considered. Within the ‘Werken aan de Ring’ programme, construction of the bicycle highway between Willebroek and Londerzeel as well as construction of the A12 Express Tram Willebroek-Brussels is being studied.
Cyclists will be able to transfer safely and easily to the Express Tram in the future owing to the continued progress in constructing the F28 and its connection to tram stops.
