Beastly graffiti brings colour to Ecoduct Groenendaal

The work on the ecoduct in Groenendaal is in full swing. To make this ‘green’ crossing for animals interesting for drivers too, the Roads and Traffic (Wegen en Verkeer) and Nature and Forest (Natuur en Bos) agencies brought in graffiti artist DZIA. He was allowed to express himself with his spray cans on the concrete middle pillar.

A quick glance at the work of DZIA, who is from Antwerp, shows that the choice of this street artist was the correct one. Animals are an important theme in his work. With abstract, geometric forms and lines, DZIA draws figures that adorn album covers, apartment blocks, stations, bridges and art galleries across the whole world.

The planting of the ecoduct will begin next year. Specific plants will ensure that various animals can safely cross from the one side of the Sonian Forest (Zoniënwoud) to the other: weasels, badgers and the like feel at home in shrubs; bats prefer to hang out in tree tops; and amphibians move about on damp soil.

Liveable environment for people and animals

The construction of this ecoduct is part of a wider project to improve the liveability of the Ring Road's surroundings for both people and animals. Thanks to high-quality green connections we will reunite beautiful nature reserves and eliminate the Ring Road's barrier effect.

By jazzing up a concrete construction with drawings of a badger, bats, frogs and a crested newt, among other things, drivers will soon get a nice image of who or what is crossing above their heads.
