Cycling infrastructure

In order to further reinforce the bicycle as a means of transport for commuter traffic in its own right, we are eliminating the 'missing links' in the cycle network. We are making sure that there is quality cycling infrastructure, with a view to encouraging people to use bicycles as often as possible.

We are investing in bicycle highways that connect the Flemish periphery safely and smoothly with Brussels, but we are also improving other bicycle facilities that benefit local and recreational cyclists. Among other things, new bicycle lanes along the 'Ringtrambus' route and new or improved bicycle connections along, under and over the Ring will be introduced.

In total, we are responsible for 40 km of new bicycle connections. With wide bicycle lanes, bends with plenty of space, adapted lighting and an obstacle-free route, cycling is becoming a safe and quick alternative to the car. The integration of the bicycle highways into the surrounding area makes every route a unique cycling experience.

Bicycle highways ensure a smooth and comfortable connection

A bicycle highway is a modern bicycle connection between busy locations: it is bicycle-friendly and of high quality along the entire route. Thanks to the bicycle highway, cyclists can enjoy a hassle-free, pleasant ride, without unnecessary delays, obstacles or stops. The factors of success for a bicycle highway include:

  • Safety: The various road users (pedestrians, cyclists, cars) are separated as much as possible. Where possible, you can cycle on separate bicycle lanes. Intersections with other roads are made grade-separated as much as possible and (dynamic) traffic lights ensure that cyclists can see and be seen in complete safety.
  • Comfort: By making the bicycle highway wide enough and providing bends with plenty of space, we are increasing the comfort of cyclists. The route is as flat as possible, and loss of priority and waiting times are kept to a minimum.
  • Continuity: Clear signing means that the bicycle highway is legible and is recognisable, and makes the distinction with other road infrastructure obvious. The route is hassle-free, and a continuous level of high quality surfacing means that cyclists can maintain a constant speed.
  • Coherence: The bicycle highway is not separate from the environment, but is integrated within it. For the construction of the car-free cycle route, the surrounding green space is taken into account. Dynamic lighting facilitates this integration into the environment: the lights only switch on when cyclists pass.
  • Attractiveness: Cycling on a bicycle highway is pleasant, since there is hardly any interaction between cars and bicycles on the route. To ensure a smooth and comfortable ride, the necessary attention is given, during construction, to good air quality and limiting noise pollution. Bridges and tunnels are landmarks on the route.

Recognisable and legible

If you see this logo, then you know that you are riding on a bicycle highway. Each bicycle highway has been given a unique code containing 1, 2 or 3 digits.
