Planning objectives of the Ring North redevelopment

31/05/2020

In the starting note published in May 2018, we outlined four planning objectives that we want to achieve with the redevelopment of the Ring: a logical and traffic-safe infrastructure, increased liveability around the Ring, multi-modal accessibility of the region, and improved integration of the infrastructure within the landscape.

Planning objectives play an important role in the assessment of the different solution directions and alternative options. The outcomes from the different studies, such as the environmental impact report plan, the traffic safety planning report and the social cost-benefit analysis, will enable us to test the various alternatives against the planning objectives.

Traffic-safe infrastructure

Old and outdated infrastructure will be redeveloped in line with the principle of separating through traffic from local traffic. We will thus achieve a more comprehensible, logical and traffic-safe infrastructure, with fewer incidents and improved traffic flow.

Better quality of life

By considering the various aspects of quality of life in the area including noise, air, health, climate, biodiversity and water, we can increase the liveability of the area around the Ring. In the nearby village centres we are working to redevelop the Ring with the aim of reducing the amount of diverted traffic, among other objectives.

Multi-modal accessibility

As part of the redevelopment, options for bicycle traffic and public transport over, under and along the Ring will also be developed. Crossing over and under will be made safer and multi-modal, and additional links and/or provision for improving through-flow for slower and public transport will be made. The obstacle that the Ring presents for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport will be reduced to increase the region's multi-modal accessibility.

Landscape integration

Efforts are being made to blend the infrastructure into its surroundings across the entire project area, which includes both the Ring and the underlying road network. This is how we aim to reduce the Ring's spatial and landscape barrier effect, to improve the quality of life in the immediate area and to contribute to the repair and enhancement of green, blue and ecological links. These efforts will reduce the barrier effect of the Ring not only for people, but also for nature and animals.
