Study

The ‘Werken aan de Ring’ programme focuses on providing sustainable and smooth mobility options for every road user. High-quality public transport is a rock-solid alternative to the car and the daily traffic tailbacks: clear departure and arrival times, seamless connections and good-quality vehicles with a high level of comfort for travellers. We are working hard to realise this ambition with the Brabantnet. This public transport network consists of three major routes that will soon guarantee an easy connection between the Noordrand and Brussels: the Airport Tram, the Ring Trambus and the Express Tram. The Express tram will connect Willebroek with Brussels, along the A12.

Rapid transit from Willebroek to Brussels with the tram

Running for a distance of 30 km, the Express tram route will link Willebroek to Londerzeel, Meise and Brussels. The tram will stop at only a few places and for that reason the trip from Willebroek to Brussels will take 40 minutes. That is 35 minutes faster than is currently possible using public transport.

Trams will have a separate track and will therefore encounter fewer congestion problems. This makes them reliable and fast. Moreover, they are comfortable, environmentally friendly and can carry many passengers. And - not insignificantly - constructing the tram line will, in the long run, generate twice as much revenue as it costs.

The Express Tram route in detail

The A12 Express Tram will run parallel to the A12 from the Fort van Breendonk to Brussels North. The stops are: Fort Willebroek, Willebroek, Londerzeel, Wolvertem, Meise, Strombeek and Heysel.

It is easy to combine the Express Tram with other means of transport:

  • There is a bicycle highway, the F28, to offer a quick and easy route running parallel with both the tram route and the A12 motorway. Park your bike at the stop of your choice and simply hop on a tram.
  • Park+Ride zones will be set up at each stop. You can then drive your car to the tram stop and take the tram to Brussels.
  • The route runs from Willebroek to Londerzeel on the east side of the A12 motorway and from Londerzeel on the west side. This will provide easy and convenient access to the various municipalities along the route from the tram stop.

When and where are we working on the A12 Express Tram?

The Project Memo for the construction of the Express Tram was approved on the 28th of October 2021. The Memo outlines which road works are necessary to build the tram line and where crossing points over the A12 will be provided for cyclists.

The tram stop environments are currently in design phase. We are making every effort to obtain the environmental permit in 2024 to secure a contractor in 2025.
