The ‘Werken aan de Ring’ programme aims to provide better cycling infrastructure. We are building safe bicycle paths and comfortable bicycle bridges and tunnels. They will enable you to cycle quickly and smoothly along and across the Ring. This is how we plan to offer road users a worthy alternative to the car and to gradually reduce the number of cars on the Ring. The construction of the F2 bicycle highway is part of this ambition.

Smooth and comfortable cycling beside the railway line from Ghent to Brussels

The F2 cycle highway runs from Ghent – via Melle, Wetteren, Aalst and other municipalities – to Brussels. The route of the F2 runs along several train stations, maximising the number of transfer points to public transport for cyclists. Locating the cycle highway beside the railway line also means that cyclists can benefit from the train’s flat route, and only rarely intersect with hazardous road traffic.

Within the framework of the 'Werken aan de Ring' programme, we will construct the missing section of the cycle highway in Dilbeek, between the Sint- Martens-Bodegem station and the Keizer Karellaan (R20) past the station in Groot-Bijgaarden. During the summer months of 2022, we renovated the station area of Sint-Martens-Bodegem with additional parking for bikes and cars. This makes it easy to combine cycling or driving with the train. We are dealing with the area around Groot-Bijgaarden station at the same time as the construction of the cycle highway.

  • The province of Flemish Brabant is studying the construction of the section of the cycle highway between Ternat (Neeralfenstraat) and Sint-Martens-Bodegem station.
  • Dilbeek municipality is studying construction in the area around Dilbeek station, from Wolsemstraat to Kloostermuur.
  • The section of the cycle highway located in the Brussels Capital Region is still under study. At Nestor Martinstraat, there is a connection to cycle highway F212 Asse-Brussels.
KaartF2

With respect for existing fauna

The area where we are building the bicycle highway is home to, among others, the slow worm and the viviparous lizard. In consultation with the Agency for Nature and Forests, we mapped out these species. Then we moved them to a safe habitat nearby. While it is under construction, we will fence off the bicycle highway site, so that these creatures do not attempt to hibernate there.

The bicycle highway itself also makes allowances for the presence of these amphibians and reptiles. It will have high edges on either side so that the animals cannot access the bicycle highway. Instead, tubes under the bicycle path will be provided so that they can cross safely.

Timing

The planning of the works takes into account the different animal species around the site. Work on the F2 cycle highway will start at Castelhof in early February. This start-up phase does not involve any disruption and diversions for local traffic. Further planning will be shared later when there is more clarity on the further progress of the works.

Phasing

  • Zone between the Molenstraat and the Wolsemstraat

In several phases, we will connect the station of Sint-Martens-Bodegem with the station of Dilbeek. We will work from the Molenstraat, off the Castelhof, to just past the Wolsemstraat tunnel. Here, we will make the connection with the existing roadway of the Wolsemstraat. From here, the F2 will follow a temporary route along the Hendrik Placestraat and the Kloostermuur.

    Phase 1 (partially completed)

Realisation of the cycle highway started at the end of February 2023 near Castelhof. The first phase, from Castelhof to Oosthoekstraat, has been completed. We will still provide a new connection from Molenstraat to the already constructed section of the cycle highway in 2024. We will probably realise this between March and June 2024.

    Phase 2 (completed)

The Oosthoekstraat was transformed into a bicycle street and is now part of the F2.

    Phase 3 (completed)

We also finished in the Tenbroekstraat. It is now a bicycle street.

Phase 4 (top layer of asphalt in April 2024)

From Tenbroekstraat to René de Cuyperstraat, the F2 runs through a number of meadows. A safe crossing with priority for cyclists is provided at the junction with Vaartstraat.

Phase 5 (top layer of asphalt in April 2024)

In René De Cuyperstraat, parallel to the railway line, we again apply the principle of the bicycle street (like Oosthoekstraat and Tenbroekstraat) and cyclists ride on the bicycle highway mixed with local traffic. We renew the entire carriageway and make a safe connection with Wolsemstraat.

  • Zone between the Kloostermuur and the Bridge Elzenstraat

From the Kloostermuur, we are working towards the Brussels Ring Road. In a first phase, we are working between the Kloostermuur and the Alderstraat bridge. The first retaining wall near the bridge has already been completed.

In 2024, 7 more labour-intensive retaining wall constructions and a lot of earthwork (over 20,000 cubic metres) will follow. By the winter of 2024, the construction of the cycle highway section between Kloostermuur and Elzenstraat should be completed.
