Study

The ‘Werken aan de Ring’ programme aims to provide better cycling infrastructure. We are building safe bicycle paths and comfortable bicycle bridges and tunnels. They will enable you to cycle quickly and smoothly along and across the Ring. This is how we plan to offer road users a worthy alternative to the car and to gradually reduce the number of cars on the Ring. The construction of the FR0 is part of this ambition.

Safely around the Ring by bike

The FR0 or R0 bicycle highway follows the route of the Ring around Brussels, the R0. The complete route starts at the station in Zellik (near Asse) continues via Wemmel, Grimbergen, Vilvoorde, Diegem, Zaventem and Kraainem to the Brussels Region. At the moment, this route has only been partially completed and connects to various bicycle highways

Several studies are currently under way for implementing sections of this route. Working on the Ring is already investing in the flyover for the FRO over the A201 and is undertaking the connection between the FR0 and the F202. With the construction of the ‘flying’ bike bridge, we are ensuring a safe cycle connection on the entry and exit roads on the Medialaan and the Tyraslaan in Koningslo.

The section between Vilvoorde and Haren is now also being tackled.

What are we going to do?

We will be constructing the missing section of the FR0 Ring cycle highway between Haren and Vilvoorde and we will provide the connection with the planned F215F216F3 and the remainder of the FR0.

The Province of Flemish Brabant carried out a study into the various junctions along the route to determine the final route. The Werkvennootschap developed this study into an implementation specification, which is currently being studied and costed by several contractors.

Meanwhile, environmental permit applications have also started in Flanders and the Brussels Capital Region.

Smooth cycling along the tracks

The route of the Ring Cycle Path runs entirely along the railway line between Haren and Vilvoorde. Along the entire route, we provide a number of earth retaining walls, structures we build to accommodate level differences on the site. On the one side of the wall the ground level is higher than on the other for the tracks.

We are also providing a number of bridges and tunnels:

  • The crossing at Haachtsesteenweg is by means of a tunnel.

  • Where the ring bike path crosses the railway, we will provide a bicycle and pedestrian bridge over the tracks.

  • A new bridge will allow you to smoothly cross Verdunstraat, Budasteenweg and Vilvoordelaan.
