Realised

At the end of June the renovated entry/exit complex at Medialaan and Tyraslaan was officially opened. This was the first major traffic complex to be completely transformed within the vision of Working on the Ring Road.

From dangerous traffic intersection to clear road layout with unique bridge for cyclists and pedestrians

The Koningslo-Vilvoorde entry/exit complex at Medialaan and Tyraslaan was known to be very cluttered. This regularly caused accidents and unsafe traffic situations, especially at the entries and exits to the Ring Road. In addition, it was impossible for pedestrians, cyclists and animals to cross the motorway complex safely.

The complete reconstruction puts an end to those dangerous situations. The entry and exit ramps are more logical and clearer. Motorists have a better view of each other which, combined with the intelligent traffic lights, reduces the number of conflicts. Pedestrians and cyclists no longer collide with those cars. They now have a 200-metre-long bicycle link that flies over the slip roads and floats under the Ring Road. A clever piece of road construction that provides a huge increase in safety. The link is part of bicycle highway F214, which connects the cargo area of Zaventem airport with Vilvoorde station.

Residential and green areas reconnected

Due to the construction of the Ring Road around Brussels, many residential and natural areas have been split up. Reconnecting these areas for people and animals is one of the spearheads of the programme Working on the Ring Road.

The 'flying bicycle bridge' acts as a connecting factor here. The Koningslo district, but also Strombeek and Neder-Over-Heembeek will get a new and welcome connection with the Kassei district, Domein Drie Fonteinen and the centre of Vilvoorde.

That same bridge, by the way, is also suitable for small animals, thus connecting the green areas to the south (Hoogveld) and north (Tangebeekbos). Less visible, but no less important, are the various eco-tunnels under the slip roads and exits and under Medialaan and Indringingsweg. Animals make eager use of these too.
