Ring trambus

End of the works

12/2024

Region

Diegem Machelen Northern side Zaventem

Project status

Planned Realised

Woluwelaan has been undergoing a complete transformation since 2021. Between the CAT site and the Brussels Ring, De Werkvennootschap is working together with the Agency for Roads and Traffic on safe, modern mobility for all road users.

From mid-2024, the Ringtrambus will run on a dedicated bus lane. With a separate bus lane in each direction, the Ringtrambus will be able to pass smoothly without obstructing other traffic. This will make the Ringtrambus a comfortable and fast alternative to the car.

Woluwelaan redevelopment in subprojects

The complete renovation of Woluwelaan in Machelen and Diegem is being carried out in a number of steps by two principals: the Agency for Roads and Traffic (AWV) and the Werkvennootschap.

The first subproject (2021-2023) between the intersection with Kerklaan and the intersection with Haachtsesteenweg will be completed by the AWV this summer. For more information on the works supervised by Roads and Traffic, visit wegenenverkeer.be/woluwelaan.

We, De Werkvennootschap, also started working in 2021. We renovated the intersection with Vilvoordelaan and constructed a two-way bus lane with dedicated cycle lanes on the Makro side.

Our next subproject will start at the beginning of this summer, tackling the zone between Haachtsesteenweg and the junction with the Ring. You can read more about the progress of the works under the Timeline button.

The Werkvennootschap Subprojects

Our work is coordinated with that of the Agency for Roads and Traffic (AWV). You can find more information on AWV projects here.

De Werkvennootschap is working on projects in both Machelen and Diegem. You can read more about these two subprojects below.

Section Machelen - completed in 2021

Between Trawoollaan and Kerklaan we constructed a two-way bus lane with a separate cycle path along the carriageway towards Diegem. In order to connect these bus lanes with the existing carriageway, the intersection of Woluwelaan and Vilvoordelaan was renovated.

Kerklaan intersection: from 2024, the Agency for Roads and Traffic will be responsible for the renovation of the intersection with Kerklaan to make room for the new bus lanes.

Section Diegem - realisation from summer 2023 to summer 2024

The entire width of Woluwelaan between Haachtsesteenweg and the Brussels Ring will be completely redeveloped. On the Diegem city centre side, we are providing the R22 with dedicated bus lanes and a new cycle path. Motorised traffic will have a new carriageway with one lane per direction on the north side. We are also constructing a wide two-way cycle path here, pleasantly separated from the roadway with water and greenery.

The intersection of Woluwelaan with A. de Cockplein will be renovated to increase safety, and so too will the T-junction at Woluwelaan with the entry and exit roads to the Ring. In addition, we will be constructing a new cycle path here which will connect with Frans Gurickxstraat.

A light-controlled crossing for pedestrians and cyclists will connect Oude Haachtsesteenweg with Watermolenstraat. This will create a safe and pleasant link across Woluwelaan between the two sides of Diegem.

Curious about how it will all look? You can see the draft plan here.  Want to know how we are handling the works in Diegem? You can read this under the Timeline button.

Bus Stops

There are to be 5 stops along the Woluwelaan in Machelen and Diegem for the Ring trambus:

Kerklaan Stop

In Machelen centre, the stop will be strategically located at the intersection of Woluwelaan and Kerklaan. As part of future planned developments, this stop could be used to strengthen Kerklaan as a link across Woluwelaan. For example, the combination of trambus stop and pedestrian crossing will reduce the barrier effect of the Woluwelaan. The Kerklaan will be upgraded to a fully-fledged link between the village square, the trambus stop and the planned new train station.

Beaulieu Stop

South of the Ring, a stop to be called Beaulieu is planned. This stop will be used by visitors to events at the nearby brownfield site. This stop will also service the industrial estate between the Ring and E19.

Gevangenis Stop

The Gevangenis stop will serve the planned, new prison (between the railway line and Haachtsesteenweg), the future De Lijn car park, as well as surrounding companies. There is a connection with the nearby operational bike path on the Budasteenweg.

Diegem dorp Stop

In Diegem, the Ring trambus stop is located on Oude Haachtsesteenweg. Where this road meets the Woluwelaan it widens out to a small square, flanked by a school, catering and hospitality establishments and other core-related services. This stop will make it easy to transfer from the Ring trambus to the main bus lines on the N21. The Diegem Dorp stop can be used to upgrade the current square into a destination in its own right within Diegem.

Watermolenstraat Stop

The Watermolenstraat stop can be found at the old Woluwelaan intersection, close to the work zones along the old Woluwelaan. The residential area along the Watermolenstraat just to the north of it are around 700 metres from the Diegem station.

Timeline

  • Phase 1 - construction of local car park with 24 spots

We will start construction of a local car park on Watermolenstraat in early June 2023. We will transform the grassy square at the present bus stop 'Diegem Woluwelaan' (towards Vilvoorde) into a nice car park with trees and spaces for 24 vehicles.

  • Phase 2 - redevelopment northern side of the Woluwelaan

From the beginning of August until the end of 2023, we will renew the northern half of Woluwelaan. Traffic will pass the works on one lane in each direction over the other half of the road. On side of supermarket Okay Alfons De Cockplein will be closed. You can temporarily drive in two directions through Watermolenstraat.

  • Phase 3 - connection with Oude Woluwelaan

During the first months of 2024, we will renew the T-junction of Woluwelaan with Oude Woluwelaan. We will do this in several phases so that the connection to and from Diegem station remains available. On Woluwelaan you can pass the works in two directions. After all, you are already driving on the newly constructed lanes (1 in each direction) on the north side. Cyclists use the two-way cycle path which is nicely and safely separated from other traffic by the Woluwe open road and lots of greenery.

  • Phase 4 - south side of Woluwelaan and Diegemplein

Shortly after the start on the intersection with the Oude Woluwelaan, we will begin to work at Diegemplein on Oude Haachtsesteenweg. Besides that, during the spring, we will start redeveloping the south side. This involves construction of the two-way bus lane with two new stops for the Ringtrambus.

The renovation of the square on Oude Haachtsesteenweg is expected to take until May 2024. For the redevelopment of the southern connection of the Alfons De Cockplein with the renovated Woluwelaan, we will be working to a sub-deadline so that this intersection can open earlier.
