Planned Study

Safer roads, better traffic flow, and a more pleasant environment for people and animals are all key elements of the ‘Werken aan de Ring’ programme. We are accelerating several projects within the programme: we are investing in 115 km of additional bicycle highways, smooth public transport, ten Hoppin points and new road infrastructure. Renovating the centre of Jezus-Eik is one such ‘quick win’. The project improves the situation for all road users, making it a great example of our multi-modal approach.

A liveable and accessible Jezus-Eik

A few years ago, a new municipal master plan for Jezus-Eik was drawn up in consultation with various partners. Addressing the village centre is an important step in this plan. The situation in which the E411 slip roads pass through the centre of Jezus-Eik is unsafe and unsustainable. Several alternatives are currently on the table for redesigning the traffic infrastructure. This is part of phase 2 of the redevelopment of Jezus-Eik (see below).

By the end of 2021, some initial adjustments were already happening in the centre of Jezus-Eik, intending to increase the liveability (phase 0). In the short term, the so-called phase 1 will follow, providing new bridges, parking spaces and a Hoppin point.

Phase 0: Modifications to the centre of Jezus-Eik (completed)

In the first phase of the redevelopment of Jezus-Eik, we tackled the speed of cars on the Brusselsesteenweg together with the municipality of Overijse by narrowing the carriageway and creating several kinks in the route.

We created a more pleasant place for residents and soft road users: there is room for wooden benches, and local trees will provide shade in the future. Parking will still be permitted, but car parking facilities will be designed differently. These are the first steps towards a fully-fledged village square for Jezus-Eik.

Phase 1: new bridges and parking spaces (planned fall 2023)

During phase 1, we will build two new bridges over the E411, one for cars and one for cyclists and pedestrians. Currently, cyclists and pedestrians only have a narrow path next to cars to cross the E411. We will separate car traffic from cyclists and pedestrians, ensuring a safe and comfortable crossing. In addition, the cycle and pedestrian bridge will be aligned to the Ring Cycle Path and connect to cycle highway F204. The old bridge will remain open during the works until the installation of the new bridge.

Under the bridge on Kersenbomenlaan, we are providing a new Hoppin point adjacent to the motorway. We are building new bus stops there on both sides of the highway, shielded from the traffic, equipped with stairs and an elevator. This offers a direct connection to and from Brussels and provides improved public transport accessibility to the centre of Jezus-Eik. We provide bicycle parking at both stops. Motorized traffic can only be parked on the Jesus-Eik side.

We will move the parking spaces to the rear of the houses, adjacent to the motorway, with a link to the new bus stop. This will create space at the front for speed-reducing measures and more green space.

Phase 2: redesign of entrance/exit slip roads and Jezus-Eik centre (study)

In due course, we will be rethinking the entry and exit slip roads of Jezus-Eik. The goal is to develop the centre of Jezus-Eik to its full potential as a recreational gateway to the Zoniënwoud (Sonian Forest), with room for terraces, bike paths and green space, and to reposition the entry and exit slip roads.

An integrated planning process is being launched to redesign the entry and exit slip roads in Jezus-Eik. It will look at the options for building new entry and exit slip roads for the E411. Click here for more information on the integrated planning process.
