Bicycle highway F29 - Tervuren

We will continue building the bicycle route between Tervuursesteenweg, the Plateau of Duisburg, Koning Boudewijnlaan and the Leuven Ring Road, a fast route featuring a limited number of crossings with motorised traffic. The bicycle highway runs across the Duisburg Plateau, which gives cyclists an impressive view of the region while providing them a safe and pleasant ride.

Tervurenlaan – Park Tervuren

We are designing Broekstraat to be more bicycle-friendly, so that cyclists coming from Brussels have enough room to cross the motorised traffic travelling towards Tervurenlaan. Using the existing bicycle path in the Koninklijke Moestuin, cyclists will ride along the Kastanjedreef into the Park of Tervuren.

Kastanjedreef will be redeveloped to reduce the speed of motorised traffic. On Spaans Huisdreef in Park Tervuren, bicycle traffic now shares the road with other park users. A new road surface that is suited  to the park environment will ensure good and comfortable bike riding as well as sufficient space for the various types of road users. The bicycle highway will leave the park at Mathieuweg and Zittekestraat where we will also be making some modifications in order to give cyclists more space.

Duisburg city centre

Mechelsestraat, where cyclists share the road with other traffic, will be completely redesigned. We are making the road surface more pleasant to cycle on by replacing the existing cobbles with asphalt. The footpaths will be relaid. We will create central islands with trees. They lower traffic speeds and make the streets look greener.

On Rootstraat, cyclists also currently share the carriageway with other traffic. Here, too, we are taking measures to reduce the speed of motorised traffic and to replace the unsafe, angled parking spaces with parallel parking. As compensation for the reduced parking, a few extra parking spaces will be provided on Kerkplaats.

Timing

From January to April 2024, we will refurbish Broekstraat. The street will be closed to through traffic for that duration. The street will remain accessible to local traffic as much as possible via either Leuvensesteenweg or Tervurenlaan.

The Hofkensstraat junctions with Tervurenlaan will be modified from mid-February to mid-March 2024. During the works, both branches will be dead-end ( entry + exit via Brusselsesteenweg) and one lane will be available on Tervurenlaan (towards Jazzfontein).

We foresee the following timeline for the implementation of the works for the adjustments throughout the park:

  • Matthieuweg from March to May 2024
  • Spaans Huisdreef in May and June 2024
  • Zittekestraat from mid-May 2024

In the Kastanjedreef area, the works cannot start until the construction works happening nearby by another party are completed. The timeline will follow later.

The redesign of Hertswegenstraat (from Zittekestraat) and Mechelsestraat is planned from second half of April/early May. For residents, we will take measures on accessibility and parking. No through traffic will be possible between Kerkplaats (Duisburg) and Achterstraat (Golf Park) until November 2024, though.
