Study

The ‘Werken aan de Ring’ programme aims to provide better cycling infrastructure. We are building safe bicycle paths and comfortable bicycle bridges and tunnels. They will enable you to cycle quickly and smoothly along and across the Ring. In this way we can offer road users a proper alternative to the car and gradually reduce the number of cars on the Ring. The construction of the bicycle path between Wezembeek-Oppem and Brussels reflects this ambition.

Easy cycling from Wezembeek-Oppem to Brussels

De Werkvennootschap (operating company) is exploring the possibility of constructing a cycle highway between Wezembeek-Oppem and Brussels. This cycle highway will connect Brussels to Wezembeek-Oppem. The preferred two-kilometre-long route runs parallel to tram line 39, consequently traversing Sint-Pieters-Woluwe, Kraainem and Wezembeek-Oppem. The cycle highway will also intersect the F29 in Tervuren and cross the Ring cycle highway to the east of the Ring. The route will also connect to the extensive Green Walk cycling path that encircles the Brussels Capital Region.

Respecting existing greenery

The construction of the cycle highway will respect existing greenery in the local surroundings and we plan to enable as much rainwater as possible to seep directly into the ground, rather than being lost to the sewerage system. We are exploring alternative surfacing options for the cycle highway in nature areas, for example. We will also consider soft-surfacing when redesigning existing cycling infrastructure wherever possible.
