Study

The ‘Werken aan de Ring’ programme aims to provide better cycling infrastructure. We are building safe bicycle paths and comfortable bicycle bridges and tunnels. They will enable you to cycle quickly and smoothly along and across the Ring. In this way we can offer road users a proper alternative to the car and gradually reduce the number of cars on the Ring. The construction of the F2 bicycle highway is part of this ambition.

Comfortably and directly from Dilbeek to Zellik

Along the Ring Road (R0), we are constructing the Ring Cycle Path (FR0), a major route that runs along the Brussels Ring Road. We are building a new section between the Ring Cycle Path between Ninoofsesteenweg (N8) in Dilbeek and the F212 cycle path (Brusselsesteenweg N9) in Zellik.

The Ring Cycle Path between Dilbeek and Zellik runs parallel to the Ring Road and will be higher than the surrounding landscape. In certain places, where necessary, we are providing experiential screens along the Ring Road so that you can fully enjoy the landscape without having to see the traffic.

We are making the slopes of the ramps leading to the Ring Cycle Path as gentle as possible so that everyone can cycle on and off easily. Where there is no room for a bicycle ramp, we provide stairs with a bicycle gutter. Where the Ring Cycle Path crosses roads with motorised traffic, we will provide a separate cycle bridge that makes the crossing as safe and smooth as possible: on Brusselsesteenweg, Alfons Gossetlaan, Brusselstraat, Robert Dansaertlaan, Kattebroekstraat, Ninoofsesteenweg and Liv. Walravenslaan.

Near the industrial estate at the traffic junction in Groot-Bijgaarden, the Ring Cycle Path runs along the Industrialaan, in anticipation of the future reconstruction of the northern part of the Brussels Ring Road.

Near the railway line in Groot-Bijgaarden, there will be a connection to the future bicycle railway F2. Just south of the railway, a bycicle bridge over the Robert Dansaertlaan will be constructed.*

At the height of the Brusselstraat as well you cycle over a separated bicycle bridge.*

In Dilbeek, near the Liv. Walravenslaan, there will be a cycle bridge over the Ring Road. These will be built at the same time as the reconstruction of the slip roads on Ninoofsesteenweg to the Ring Road.*

* The images on this page are a possible future vision; the design is still in progress. So they may still change.

Connection to other cycle paths

Halfway through the route there is a connection to the F2 cycle path in Dilbeek near the railway line and the F212 cycle path between Asse and Brussels. The connection between the Ring Cycle Path with the F212 will be considered along with the future reconstruction of the slip roads in Zellik. In the meantime, we are looking at where we can provide a provisional route. This may run under the approach to the Brusselsesteenweg (N9) towards the Ring Road.

When will this cycle link be built?

At the moment, we are conducting a few more studies. For example, we are surveying the characteristics of the soil through drilling to determine the soil structure and to be able to assess the stability of the subsurface.

The calendar going forward is as follows:

  • Completion of project memo (study phase): summer 2022
  • Design: autumn 2022 - spring 2023
  • Appointment of a contractor: autumn 2023 - spring 2024
  • Start of work: 2024

Once the study phase is complete, we will organise an information event for local residents. You will receive an invitation in your mailbox.
