Towards a safe solution for the A8

Planned

The intersections with traffic lights on the A8 in Halle create dangerous traffic situations and tailbacks on a daily basis up to and on the Brussels Ring Road. The Werkvennootschap has been working on a safe and sustainable solution for the A8 in Halle and the surrounding area since 2022.

Motorways with intersections cause problems

Intersections with traffic lights allow traffic from adjoining roads to cross the A8 safely. Meanwhile, those same traffic lights create dangerous situations: motorists do not expect to see lights on a motorway. Several fatal accidents have occurred here in recent years. Furthermore, the traffic lights cause congestion, leading to traffic jams on the Brussels Ring Road and cut-through traffic in residential areas. This situation is detrimental to the quality of life in the surrounding neighbourhoods.

The A8 Halle project

The Werkvennootschap has been working on a safe and sustainable solution for the A8 and its surroundings since 2022. We are focusing on the section of the A8 motorway between the Brussels Ring Road (Halle exit) and the Brussels-Charleroi Canal. There are three other intersections with traffic lights there, along Halleweg, Nijvelsesteenweg and Rodenemweg.

What do we want to achieve with the A8 project?

We are building on the studies of recent years and on the framework established by the Government of Flanders. We are taking into account evolutions in policy and on the ground. In 2022, the manifesto statement appeared with renewed ambitions and goals for the A8. We are studying these further to determine the look and layout of possible solutions.

We are also working on an overarching vision for the A8, taking the various challenges into account.

  • Improved traffic flow and road safety on the A8.
  • Reduced traffic pressure and increased road safety on local roads in Halle.
  • More space for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.
  • Better connection between neighbourhoods around the A8.
  • Improving liveability in the vicinity of the A8.
  • Enhancing nature and waterways around the A8.

What is the status of the various possible redesign solutions?

The various options for the redesign of the A8 were examined based on studies, consultations, questions and suggestions. This led to new insights, but also some new issues.

Stakeholder consultation

We want to involve everyone as much as possible in the redesign of the A8. Therefore, we will review the studies with diverse actors and consult a great many stakeholders throughout the process. This way, we will map out the opportunities, questions and concerns that exist and arrive at a supported solution.

In autumn 2022, governments, administrations, businesses, schools, associations and citizens were involved to sharpen the objectives and framework for the redevelopment. This led to the Manifesto.

The study team worked out the different scenarios and possible solutions and all residents had the chance to share their opinions and ideas in early 2023. We revisited this and arrived at a vision for a sustainable redesign of the A8 for all residents and users. The progress was shared with stakeholders again in February 2024 at an  info market. Timing

Current studies show that the redesign of the A8 is a technically complex dossier. Additional studies are needed to arrive at one viable solution. A new spatial implementation plan (RUP) will also have to be drawn up. This will be an additional element in the study phase.

The timing below is indicative and subject to change depending on the project's progress:

  • 2022 – 2027: study phase
  • December 2022: Manifesto with 'Ambitions and possible scenarios for the A8'. This document can be consulted here. (in Dutch and French only)
  • 2027 – 2030: DBFM tender
  • 2029-2034 (subject to change): start of works / reconstruction of the A8.

What does DBFM mean?  The abbreviation DBFM stands for Design, Build, Finance and Maintain. It is a form of contract whereby the government works with a private partner to realise a project.
