Study

We are fully committed to more and better bicycle infrastructure with the 'Werken aan de Ring' (Work on the Ring) programme. We are building safe bicycle paths and comfortable bicycle bridges and tunnels. They will enable you to cycle smoothly and quickly along and across the Ring Road. This is how we can provide road users with a good alternative to cars and gradually reduce the number of vehicles on the Ring Road. The construction of the Ring bicycle path between the F28 bicycle highway and the F23 bicycle highway is in line with this ambition.

Smoothly and comfortably from Strombeek-Bever to Vilvoorde

Along the Ring Road (R0), we are constructing the Ring Cycle Path (FR0), a major cycle ring that runs along the Brussels Ring Road. We are building a new section of the Ring Cycle Path between the F28 bicycle highway (N276) in Grimbergen and the F23 bicycle highway (Vilvoordsesteenweg N260) in Vilvoorde.

The Ring Cycle path runs parallel to the inner side of the Ring Road and starts from the branch of the F28 Bicycle highway with the A12 interchange. At Potaardestraat, there is a connection to the existing tunnel under the Ring Road to the Douwe Egberts business site. From Landhuizenlaan, the route largely runs parallel to the Ring Road in existing verges or on existing roads. Near Klein Hoogveld, the route will take on a rural character.

We will provide a number of new bicycle bridges to avoid dangerous intersections:

  • Over the junction with Grimbergsesteenweg, we will be providing a new bicycle bridge. Between the bicycle highway and the adjoining gardens, we will place screens that will continue to guarantee privacy.
  • For a smooth junction of the Ring bicycle path with Sint-Annlaan, we are constructing a new bicycle bridge, just beyond the entry and exit ramps of the Ring Road.
  • Over Albert I-laan, we will provide a bicycle bridge connecting to Klein Hoogveld. Here we will be looking at how local traffic and the Ring bicycle path can use the street together.
  • Close to the newly constructed flying bicycle bridges under the Ring Road, we will be providing a new bicycle bridge over Medialaan. This allows you to cycle smoothly on the Ring bicycle path and connect with businesses on the other side of the Ring Road.

From Medialaan, the Ring bicycle path gradually descends to the Vilvoordsesteenweg (N260). At the Drie Fonteinen Domain, the Ring bicycle path follows the existing footpath up to the F23 bicycle highway. We will widen the footpath so that walkers and cyclists both have enough space.

The Ring Cycle path runs along the Strombeek and Het Voor districts. We will provide a connection to the Ring bicycle path with both residential areas, as well as for the surrounding business parks.

When will this cycle link be built?

We are currently determining the principles of the bicycle highway. We are determining the materials, design of the bridges, draining, mitigating measures, etc.

The further planning looks like this (provisional planning):

  • Project paper: Q4 - 2023
  • Design: Q1 2024 – Q3 2024
  • Appointing contractor: Q4 - 2024
  • Start of work: 2025
